In 1978 the Caprice only had minor front and rear style changes. The Caprice also had lower axle ratios which were used to boost fuel economy. The 305 had an aluminum intake manifold drastically reducing engine weight, a brake booster was also added in an effort to reduce braking effort.

In 1979 the Caprice once again only had minor front and rear style changes. The 305 version lost 15 HP due to a change to a smaller carburetor however the 250 version gained 5 horsepower this year.

In 1980 large revisions were made to the Chevrolet Caprice, new exterior sheet metal was used but the looks were not changed too much. The aerodynamics were also improved from a higher trunk area and a lower hood.

In 1981 the Caprice had only one stylistic change, the egg crate grille now had larger sections. New redesigned disc brakes had less drag and a plastic master cylinder.

In 1982 once again only minor styling changes were made. The Caprice Landau was dropped from the line leaving the coupe sedan and wagon models. The 350 diesel engine was now available to all models and the automatic overdrive transmission was available with the 267 and 305.

In 1983 all two doors were dropped along with the six passenger wagon, this only left two models the 4 and 8 person wagon. The 305 was the standard engine for the wagons and only came equipped with an automatic overdrive transmission.

In 1985 exterior styling was completely unchanged for the Caprice, however the interior got a major facelift, the first since 1977. Simulated wood grain replaced the simulated metallic dash and the Caprice got a modern DIN-and-a-half radio.
