1966 Chevy Caprice

First launched in 1965, the Chevrolet Caprice remained in production in the US through 1996. The Chevrolet Caprice had four generations of body styles during its US production years. The first generation was produced from 1965 through 1970. The second generation was produced from 1971 until 1976. The third generation Chevy Caprice was produced from 1977 until 1990. The fourth generation Caprice was produced from 1991 through 1996. Beginning in 2011, the Caprice nameplate returned to the US as an import from GM’s Australian subsidiary, Holden, specifically imported to serve as a police vehicle.

The Caprice was a big success when it was launched in mid-1965. Chevrolet’s Caprice was created as a luxury version of the Impala four-door hardtop, including a firmer suspension, higher-grade cloth, vinyl seat, and door trim (as well as thicker, higher-quality carpeting), walnut trim on the dashboard and door panels, pull straps on the doors and additional convenience lights. A full vinyl roof was optional.

The redesigned Caprice was launched in 1971 with a longer 121.5-inch wheelbase and featured fuselage styling. Flush exterior door handles and double-shell roofs were new on the Caprice, having been adapted from the Camaro door handle. In an article in May 1971, Motor Trend compared the top of the line Caprice with the Cadillac Coupe de Ville and concluded that the Chevy Caprice was the better value, with luxury almost as good as the Cadillac at just over half of the cost.

The Caprice was renamed the Caprice Classic for 1973 and retained this name through 1996. When the third generation was launched in 1977, the Caprice was totally redesigned with a wheelbase 5 ½ inches shorted and weighing over 600 pound less than the 1976 Caprice. The model was awarded a Motor Trend Car of the Year award.

The Caprice received another Motor Trend award in 1990 when it was totally redesigned again.
